Senior Advisor Water & Sanitation Section at Unicef

Lizette Burgers is currently leading UNICEF’s Toilet Team in New York, advocating to eliminate open defecation and to promote WASH in schools and health centres through global partnerships and technical support to countries. She will be a key player in the roll-out of the global UN campaign to eliminate open defecation by engaging in global partnerships and by supporting countries with advocacy and guidance to scale up evidence based sanitation and hygiene promotion programmesLizette has a Master’s degree in waste water engineering with a postgraduate degree in communication science. She worked over 25 years with different international organisations and research institutes in Europe, Latin America, West Africa and Asia. Over the last years she was UNICEF’s Chief of WASH in India and in Afghanistan, and she is in the final stage of finishing a Master’s degree in Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
