Close Latin America’s Sanitation Gap through Innovation

Do you remember the last time your water stopped for a few hours? The unease of not being able to flush, waste building up, dignity shaken.  Now, stretch those hours into days, weeks, even years—with no relief in sight.

Picture this: you wake up at night and have to leave your home to find a toilet. But instead of a clean, safe bathroom, there is only a hole in the ground, buzzing with flies. Imagine missing school because you lack menstrual health products or the privacy for basic hygiene. Imagine no clean water to wash your hands, spreading disease.

For millions in Latin America, this is not imagination. This is daily life. Nearly half of the population in Latin America and the Caribbean lack access to safely managed sanitation—a fundamental human right tied to health, dignity, gender equality, climate resilience, and so much more. Low-income communities suffer most, where adequate infrastructure is not within reach.

But in this story, there are heroes.

Entrepreneurs are Driving Solutions

These heroes are the entrepreneurs—innovators who refuse to accept this reality. They are rewriting the script on sanitation, proving that business-led solutions can be fast, affordable, and sustainable. Their ideas are already working. What they need now is scale—so no child, family, or community is left behind. In 2023, the Toilet Board Coalition Accelerator expanded into Latin America, thanks to co-financing from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and IDB Lab through the Source of Innovation alliance, delivered in collaboration with Water For People. The Project is currently in its third year, having graduated eight small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across the region, impacting 98,671 households, with an additional five SMEs in the 2025 Cohort set to graduate at the end of this year.

In El Progreso, rural Honduras, founder Ingrid Cortez refined her business model to boost daily service capacity, double gross margins, and lower prices for families. By optimising costs and increasing service frequency, prices are dropping while profitability and reach expand.

The Fundrazr Campaign

Significant progress has been made, but urgent action is still needed if we are to achieve SDG 6—safe water and sanitation for all by 2030. You have the chance to drive this momentum.

With $150,000, we can support seven innovative sanitation SMEs from Latin America in our 2026 programme (January–December). Every $20,000 enables one sanitation entrepreneur to access corporate mentorship, business model coaching, and investment readiness—equipping them to scale solutions that bring us closer to universal sanitation.

Your funding will support impactful entrepreneurs, accelerating business solutions to the sanitation crisis, and standing with the heroes who are building a healthier, more dignified future for Latin America.

The funds will cover key areas, including dedicated expertise from Accelerator coaches who directly support SMEs, branding and marketing efforts and the coordination of major events that bring together entrepreneurs, partners, and investors.

Join us to accelerate business solutions to the sanitation crisis. Support more SMEs next year and enable progress on SDG 6. Your funding is dignity restored, health protected, and lives transformed.
